New Year countdown specials are an essential part of the festivities and among them is the famous Rockin’ Eve originally hosted by Dick Clark. The ball drop in New York City is so iconic that those of us who’ve never even been to New York likely have fond memories of it. Well now the Dick Clark New Year’s Rockin’ Eve special is getting a Spanish addition for the first time ever, Billboard reported and it’s taking place in Puerto Rico. The island will feature its first-ever Spanish language countdown as part of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2022.
While Spanish broadcast networks typically host their own, it will be the first time the ABC network hosts a Spanish-language countdown in its twenty seasons. This inaugural show coincides with the 500th anniversary of the founding of San Juan, where the show will take place. The program announced that Reggaeton artist Daddy Yankee will headline the show with actress and singer Roselyn Sanchez acting as co-host. Daddy Yankee will also perform a medley of his music during the live broadcast. The pair will be hosting from the Puerto Rico Convention Center at Distrito T-Mobile. The additional hosts include Ryan Seacrest, who will be in Times Square with Liza Koshy and Billy Porter, who will be in New Orleans, and Ciara with DJ D-Nice, who will be in Los Angeles.
Spectators who are vaccinated will be allowed to attend the show. While Daddy Yankee is the only performer who is currently confirmed to perform during the broadcast, Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi could not help but express his excitement about the historic addition to the broadcast.
“We are very excited to host Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2022 on our island and to count on this high-caliber event to project the greatness of Puerto Rico and our people,” he said in a statement. “This celebration not only allows Puerto Ricans to enjoy this great historic event; it also speaks to diverse communities around the world that our Island is ready to receive tourism and foster economic development. We have so much to offer as a destination, and New Year’s Rockin’ Eve will be a testament to all that Puerto Rico has to offer.” With a change to an event as big as Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2022, it truly proves that music continues to break barriers.
Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2022 will air live on Friday, Dec. 31, starting at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. Puerto Rico’s countdown is set for 11 p.m. ET.
