What’s the difference between El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras? According to Fox News, nothing. Furthermore, the journalists at the conservative network seem to think that they’re all countries that reside in Mexico. That’s the information that they gave out on Sunday morning during a segment on “Fox & Friends.”

While the political pundits discussed the pressing issue regarding the U.S. government halting all foreign aid to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, the display at the bottom of the screen said: “Trump cuts U.S. aid to 3 Mexican countries.” Viewers weren’t sure if they read it correctly, and once they realized Fox’s error, people on social media hilariously roasted them.

“Ellen” producer Andy Llassner ‏tweeted, “Hardest part of planning a vacation is always deciding which of the Mexican countries to visit. Jemele Hill ‏tweeted, “I was today years old when I found out Mexico was 3 countries.” Writer and comedian Natasha Rothwell ‏tweeted: “The profound stupidity of the right is at once expected and truly unbelievable.”

Although it is funny, it’s important to realize the severity of their mistake, and even more so the mindset that some conservatives have about Mexico and Central America. It might have been the error of one person, but the mentality of anti-immigrant and pro-Trump supporters is all brown people are the same and come from one place: Mexico.

“What’s amazing about Fox News’ ‘3 Mexican Countries’ SNAFU is that it exemplifies perfectly how the Far Right sees the world,” Writer Jared Yates Sexton ‏tweeted. “Just an outrageously ignorant perspective where other people’s are interchangeable, and there’s no need to consider them or their well-being.”

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also weighed in on Twitter saying “Just a reminder that these are the same folks who assert their superiority by belittling the intelligence and good faith of others.”

Fox quickly realized their mistake and issued an apology. “We want to clarify and correct something that happened earlier in the show,” “Fox & Friends” host Ed Henry said later in the segment. “We had an inaccurate graphic on screen while talking about this very story. We just want to be clear, the funding is being cut off to the three Central American countries. We apologize for the error.”

As we poke fun at Fox for being ignorant, it’s crucial that their errors don’t deflect from what the government is doing to the people of Central America, and the message that conservative media projects to viewers.

“Yes, yes, they called it ‘Three Mexican’ Countries,” author Julissa Arce ‏tweeted, “But did you see that part that Trump cut aid to Central American countries and that will likely increase migration to the U.S, and he is putting said migrants in cages under bridges in El Paso?!?!”

Yes, let’s not forget what is happening here.
