Here’s some good news to start you off on the right foot this Monday. It looks like Warner Bros. has finally released a date for the film adaptation of Lin Manuel-Miranda’s Tony-award winning musical, In The Heights. It’s making it’s debut on June 26, 2020 and I don’t know about you, but I could NOT be more excited!

Miranda’s musical play is set in Washington Heights, New York City—a predominately Dominican community. The story follows Usnavi, a bodega owner who dreams of winning the lotto, leaving his neighborhood, and escaping to his native island Dominican Republic. It won a 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical and was originally going to be set up for film by the Weinstein Company. That’s what was announced back in 2016. But the project was immediately taken away by the company last fall after Harvey Weinstein’s sexual allegations broke out and the #MeToo movement began.

Now Warner Bros. has taken on the production and Crazy Rich Asians director Jon Chu is down as one of the director’s of the production. Miranda not only wrote the music and lyrics for Broadway’s In The Heights but he also starred as the show’s lead. As of right now we don’t know if he’ll actually be featured in the film, but god I hope so.

Miranda has a lot of great stuff in the works. He’s taking his Tony, Grammy and Pulitzer-Prize-winning Broadway musical Hamilton to Puerto Rico in January 2019, in efforts to help raise money for Hurricane Maria relief. He’s starring as Jack in the new Mary Poppins Returns movie alongside Emily Blunt, which is set to release December 2018 and now he has In The Heights hitting the movie theaters. He’s everywhere—I love it!

As someone who never got a chance to catch In The Heights on Broadway, it would be more than a treat to see Miranda acting in the film adaption. Seriously, it would be almost as good as watching him live. Let’s cross our fingers he chooses to play the lead role!
