Mexican actress Natalia Cordova-Buckley will be the voice of Frida Kahlo in the upcoming release of Pixar’s Coco. I truly thought all the cast members had already been announced so this comes as a big surprise. And we’re really excited about it. Because really, how could Frida’s spirit not be in a film about Day of the Dead.

While we’re not familiar with the work of Cordova-Buckley, she’s apparently in the TV show “Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Coco also stars Benjamin Bratt, Gael Garcia Bernal, Edward James Olmos, among others. Cordova-Buckley expressed her excitement on Instagram saying: “I’ve been chasing the spirit of Frida Kahlo my entire life, so to be able to give voice to the woman that taught me the freedom and strength of my own, is not just an honor but profoundly magical!”

Cordova-Buckley also included a quote by Coco director, Lee Unkrich, “Frida Kahlo is a captivating icon in Mexico’s history. Her art, strength and resilience inspired us in so many ways. Natalia’s role in Coco pays homage to Ms. Kahlo, her work and the people of Mexico who love her.”

People all over the world love her!

From the looks of her Instagram, it looks as if Cordova-Buckley had dropped a subtle hint about the news she was about to announce because a day ago she posted the image below.

But surely, no one thought anything of it considering the actress is a fan of Frida. Just look at this precious crocheted Frida doll that she has next to beauty products. So cute!

Cordova-Buckley also tweeted her joy over being part of this extraordinary film. “Honored to be part of Coco. Magic is giving voice to the woman who taught you the power behind your own. !” And she also added: “Beyond honored to be part of a film that celebrates my culture & country with such passion & respect!”

Coco will be released in U.S. theaters on November 22.
