Some people believe that just because Donald Trump is president that anyone can be president. Well, that is kind of correct. Yes, Trump is a sad excuse for a president, and yes, there’s been talks of other celebs running for president (umm…Kanye, Oprah) but should we continue this trend of non-political people running for president? Former boxing champ, Oscar De La Hoya says yes.

“If Arnold (Schwarzenegger) can be governor, if Trump can be president, then why can’t a Mexican American who won an Olympic gold medal, who’s over 35 and a U.S. citizen run for president?” De La Hoya said, according to KTLA.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday at MGM Grand Vegas, De La Hoya who also is CEO of a promotional company that is putting on the Canelo Álvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin rematch, said he is very serious about running for president.

He also said: “As I got older, I get wiser and as I get wiser, I get smarter and as I get smarter, I start to realize the millions and millions of people who’ve told me, ‘Oscar, why don’t you run for some kind of office? Because you can make a difference.'”

While De La Hoya may have been a champ in the ring, off the ring is a different story. The 45-year-old has had his fair share of scandals (remember when he was caught cross dressing?), but he has a point when he says, if Trump can be president why can’t he? Some people don’t seem to care about what a person does before they become elected, or even after, so maybe he does have a chance?

Former President of Mexico is definitely rooting him on. In a video, Vicente Fox said: “You are honored and respected all over the world. You are well known in California, supported by all which you’ve done. You are a fighter. You are a warrior. You do fight for human rights. You do protect and fight for Hispanics and Mexican Americans rights in the United States … that’s you, Oscar. I’m with you all the way. You will make it … President or ‘Future President of the United States.’ Fight. Win. That country needs people like you.”

Well there you have it. Would you vote for Oscar De La Hoya?
