Rita Moreno turns 86 today! On this special birthday, we’d like to gift you the many ways she has brought pure joy into our world. First, let us say that while this Puerto Rican legend has been slaying for more than half a century, Moreno has not stopped entertaining audiences since she was 11-years-old! This living queen got her first Broadway role at age 13 and she has not looked back since. It’s pretty remarkable when you think about how long Moreno has been part of show business and was never one of those celebrities that just disappears.
Aside from her role as Lydia Riera on “One Day At A Time,” audiences will see her in the anticipated remake of West Side Story, directed by Steven Spielberg. After initially saying no to any involvement in the remake, Moreno agreed to starring a new role after a request from Spielberg.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I see myself revisiting this seminal work,” she said. “And to be asked by Steven Spielberg to participate is simply thrilling!”
According to Yahoo, Moreno has been in eight Broadway productions, starred in more than 46 movies and 50 TV shows, and is one of the very few who is an EGOT winner, which means she has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.
Here’s just a few moments in Moreno’s life and career that has left of breathless and inspired.
Thank you, Rita for your amazing body of work, and even more for representing Latinas through and through.
