“Selena: The Series” Confirms Full Cast including Christian Serratos

Fans of Selena have been hearing about Selena: The Series for months now and Netflix just announced the cast that includes The Walking Dead’s Christian Serratos as the Tejano icon and newcomer Jesse Posey as Chris Perez

Fans of Selena have been hearing about Selena: The Series for months now and Netflix just announced the cast that includes The Walking Dead’s Christian Serratos as the Tejano icon and newcomer Jesse Posey as Chris Perez. The series debuts on Netflix in 2020 and both Selena’s sister Suzette Quintanilla and her dad Abraham Quintanilla Jr. are executive producers on the series. Fans of Selena, the 1997 Greg Nava film starring J.Lo, can expect a similar treatment of Selena’s life and career in the series which has been dubbed as “the official story.” In the teaser trailer introducing Serratos, we see her embodying Selena as she’s reading the script for the series. She’s seen practicing Selena’s dance moves, singing like her, and even applying lipstick the way Selena used to before heading to a stage wearing the iconic purple outfit from Selena’s last performance, singing with a rose-covered mic. The cast reveals are expected to roll out in anticipation of the show’s 2020 debut and in addition to the cast portraying the family, Netflix also revealed Hunter Reese Peña, Paul Rodriguez Jr., and Carlos Alfredo Jr. will play members of Selena’s band while Daniela Estrada portrays a young Suzette, Deadline reports. 

Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel a great responsibility to do justice to her memory,” Suzette Quintanilla said in a statement. “With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives.”

Christian Serratos as Selena

Serratos is best known for her work as Rosita Espinosa on AMC’s The Walking Dead and as Angela Weber in The Twilight Saga movies. She is also known for playing Suzie Crabgrass in the Nickelodeon series Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide and her other TV credits include The Secret Life of the American Teenager and American Horror Story. Serratos is of Italian and Mexican descent and recently posted a teaser trailer for the series saying “Here we go!!! Besitos.

Jesse Posey as Chris Perez

Newcomer Jesse Posey will play Chris Perez, her lead guitarist turned husband who, like in the 1997 film, will navigate life working for Selena and her family while also being in a relationship with her. Posey’s film credits include Stitchers and First Love and he’s also related to Tyler Posey, known for his work in Teen Wolf and their mother was of Mexican descent.

Ricardo Chavira as Abraham Quintanilla

Mexican-American Ricardo Chavira is best known for his role as Carlos Solis on all eight seasons of Desperate Housewives and has also guest-starred on Jane the Virgin as Bruce, one of Xiomara’s former boyfriends. He’s also had a recurring role on the Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet. “The whole family is getting together for Selena, The Series. The story of the legendary Tejano artist is coming to Netflix in 2020. @christianserratos I’m a proud dad,” he recently tweeted.

Seidy López as Marcella Quintanilla

Mexican-American actress Seidy López is best known for her starring debut in the critically acclaimed 1993 film Mi Vida Loca, about young Mexicanas and Chicanas growing up in Echo Park, a previously mostly Latinx neighborhood in Los Angeles. López actually had a role in the 1997 film as Deborah, the friend in the famous shopping mall scene.

Gabriel Chavarria as A.B. Quintanilla

Gabriel Chavarría played Jacob Aguilar in Hulu’s East Los High and he was the lead in Season 1 of the USA Network/SyFy series The Purge based on the film franchise. He also made an appearance as “Preacher” in War For The Planet Of The Apes and was in the 2018 film Hunter Killer. According to IMDB he’s passionate about music — a trait he shares with A.B.— and founded his own independent music label G & B Music Group. He’s been posting on Instagram about the series with famous lines from the film and his latest post shows him holding up a bass guitar with the caption “AyyyyyBeeeee.”

Juan Martinez is a young actor, known for his work on films Triple Frontier and Bless Me, Ultima, and his recurring role as Beau Martinez on Grey’s Anatomy.  He’ll be playing a young A.B. as he develops his sound as they form the family band with Selena at the helm.
