The phrase “once in a blue moon” could not bear any more truth than it does on January 31 this year. Not only is a blue moon rare but the fact that it’s also a blood moon and super moon taking place during a lunar eclipse makes it worth waking up at the pre-dawn hours to witness it, depending on what side of the world you’re on.

But before even breaking down the spiritual meaning of each moon, let’s break down what this celestial trifecta means: super moon (full moon relatively close to the earth), blood moon (occurs during lunar eclipse, will be orange or red) and blue moon (second full moon in one calendar month, rare instance).

To get the full effect of this powerful trifecta, first recognize that you might feel a little aggressive considering this is an eclipse in Leo. If you’ve been running around like a nut for whatever reason, this a perfect time to tug at those spiritual breaks a bit.

“Right now the moon is the closest it has been to earth, for those of us who are sensitive and emotional it’s especially important to stay grounded and slow down. The moon can sometimes amplify our feelings of anxiety or sadness, so it is critical to take time to reflect and write. Take this time to nourish yourself,” says queer Chicana and psychic reader The Mexican Witch.

With any full moon, you have to center yourself to allow all that lunar energy to amplify what you want out of life and strategic moves currently in motion. Meaning, it’s a perfect time to quite literally clean house and get rid of anything (or anyone!) you don’t need.

“Raise your vibration by surrounding yourself with amazing people and distancing yourself from those that distract you from your true purpose.” says professional astrologer Majdoline Bashir, also known as AstroMaji.

Release any negative influences and get in the mindset that you are living an authentic and creative life.”

The moon’s effect is powerful and can last far beyond the next month, so practice with intention. Whip out that journal and write down what you are ready to let go of and what you truly want to replace it with. Be honest with yourself. It’s okay to dream big. Then repeat aloud to yourself.

This is also a perfect time to revisit those new year’s resolutions, tweak them as you see fit.

Bashir also suggests saging your home and getting rid of clutter. She also says she likes to use the full moon as an opportunity to make full moon water, which is essentially just water that you set outside under the light of the full moon to charge. She then puts it in a spray bottle to use for baths or personal sprays. It’s a simple and a cool way to charge up your crystals as well.

Once you’re all set, you can move on to what The Mexican Witch practices as she says indulging in baths and tea help her stay grounded and declutter her mind.

“The moon also helps us connect to our intuition and psychic power so this is the perfect time for third eye meditation, tarot reading and divination,” says The Mexican Witch. Even if you don’t fancy yourself spiritually inclined but have always been curious, tonight is the night to try it.

Rituals for psychic awareness include working with crystals like labradorite and amethyst as well as consuming mugwort tea or lighting a dressed purple candle. She says now is the time to allow yourself to be open, vulnerable and receive guidance.
