Trump’s Ignorant Tweets Regarding DACA Are Beyond Concerning

While most of us were home enjoying Easter dinner with our families — Trump took the holiday as an opportunity to go on a Twitter rant about immigration and the DACA. In fact, his tweets from Sunday are more concerning than they are alarming. He tweeted a serious of problematic statements including his rescinded support for a deal with Democrats on the DACA.

Trump started off with tweeting “HAPPY EASTER” and everything that followed that was straight up nonsense. “Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release. Getting more dangerous. “Caravans” coming. Republicans must go to Nuclear Option to pass tough laws. NOW. NO MORE DACA DEAL!” he tweeted.

What a great way to address Americans on Easter, right? To no one’s surprise it got worse. He then went on to attack Mexico. “Mexico is doing very little, if not NOTHING, at stopping people from flowing into Mexico through their Southern Border, and then into the U.S. They laugh at our dumb immigration laws. They must stop the big drug and people flows, or I will stop their cash cow, NAFTA. NEED WALL!”

He even blamed Democrats for the DACA being “dead” due to their lack of care or act. No only were these tweets unpresidential— as his tweets normally tend to be— but they also made no kind of sense. What’s particularly odd about him blaming Democrats for the end of DACA, is the fact that he himself put an end to the program last September.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals programs was originally designed to legalize undocumented immigrants that were brought to the states as children. It had protected close to 800,000 young undocumented immigrants from deportation. Last fall, the Trump administration announced the end of the DACA . Congress was given a March 5th deadline to act to preserve the the program’s DACA recipients before losing their status. Trump claimed he was doing this to better American citizens but he never offered another solution. He never even suggested a plan to replace it so really— what is this man even ranting about on Twitter?

His tweets regarding border control are frankly even more idiotic. Trump accused people who have crossed the Mexico-U.S. border and entered the country illegally, as trying to take advantage of the DACA program. It makes me question if he even understands how the DACA used to work.

For starters, the program isn’t even available anymore so how would they be trying to take advantage of it? Secondly, even when the DACA program was still running, it wasn’t that easy to qualify for it. Immigrants had to have lived in the U.S. since 2007 so that’s one. They had to have arrived here before the age of 16 AND they had to have been younger than 31 on June 15, 2002. In other words, who the hell has been trying to take advantage of the DACA? No one.

His tweets were upsetting but more importantly—inaccurate and it’s frightening to see a president tweeting out inaccurate information to American citizens. Don’t get me started on his violent and ignorant “nuclear option” suggestion.

What’s even more devastating about this, is that someone who doesn’t even fully understand how the DACA operates or anything about immigration policies in the states at all— is the one who put an end to a program that could have continued to protect young undocumented immigrants in this country. Now that’s the true tragedy in all of this.
