Over the past decade, entitled tourists appear to have increased in Mexico and across Latin America. From asking locals to speak English to disrespecting cultural traditions, some visitors from the U.S. have become increasingly comfortable displaying xenophobia while on vacation. Now, an American tourist in Mexico City is going viral on TikTok for her disrespectful behavior toward locals, reigniting conversations about gentrification in the city.
Earlier this week, Mexican local Martin Navarro posted two TikTok videos describing an altercation with an American tourist at Taqueria Orinoco in Mexico City. According to Navarro, the woman, who appeared to be drunk, asked staff to call her a taxi. When they refused, she became aggressive and allegedly hit a waitress. Navarro says he intervened, and she threw his tacos at him. He also said she repeatedly asked staff what they were paid and used xenophobic slurs.
Navarro said he did not want to press charges because the process would be too much for him. The incident has reignited conversations about entitled American tourists and gentrification in Mexico City. One TikTok user wrote, “All the videos I’ve seen of Americans in Mexico City show them being disrespectful to locals.”
Another commented, “They ask how much we make here, but they’re the first ones to come to Mexico because life is less expensive and they feel like kings.”
Mexico City has seen several protests against gentrification in recent years, driven by issues including incidents like this, inflation, and the displacement of local residents. Some people are now calling for the city to restrict or take action against entitled visitors. While we hope things improve, disrespectful tourist behavior seems to be a growing problem across Latin America.
