Imagine what it would feel like to be out with your friends, attempting to go into a bar, and instead of getting carded, are told to remove your makeup? That’s exactly what happened last week to Bobby Rodriguez, a gay Latino from Corpus Christi (yes, Selena’s hometown).

Bobby posted on Facebook that he was out socializing one night with friends when they decided to go to the Whiskey River Corpus Christi — a bar he has gone to before. He writes that the security at the door denied him entry because he was wearing makeup.

“This homophobic security guard at the door told me i couldn’t come into whiskey’s unless I wiped off my makeup because there is a rule which there are no signs stating that men need to dress like men and so on for women.. I’ve never been so offended in my life WOW…”

Bobby told BuzzFeed News that he has been allowed to enter before, even while wearing makeup before and it wasn’t an issue until last week.

“I was there for three hours and [the club] had no problem with it,” Bobby told BuzzFeed News. “I wear makeup to every bar and no bar has ever had a problem with me. If you didn’t want a dude wearing makeup, why not address it the first time?”

Bobby says that he eventually took off his makeup and went inside, but did so only because his friends were already inside the bar and he didn’t want to force them to leave.

The bar’s owner — Angela Blohm — did comment to a report by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times saying: the “Whiskey River has a standard dress code that states everyone must dress gender appropriate to the gender stated on their state-issued driver’s license.” Angela Blohm added that the conversation between the security and Bobby “cannot be verified.”

“I’m a dude. I know I’m a dude. I just like to put on makeup,” Bobby told BuzzFeed News. “You will not catch me out and about without makeup.”
