Demi Lovato Deletes Twitter After Facing Backlash Over Poking Fun At 21 Savage

Yesterday’s Super Bowl in Atlanta wasn’t all about the game. Grammy-nominated rapper 21 Savage was arrested in his hometown of Atlanta and taken into immigration detention. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained the 26-year-old artist after learning that he had overstayed his traveling visa when he entered the U.S. in 2005. Back then, 21 Savage was merely a 13-year-old boy named Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph. Now he is facing deportation back to his native country of England. People on social media were buzzing about this surprising development including some celebrities, one of them was Demi Lovato.
The singer, who’s just recently returned to social media after leaving a rehab facility and celebrated six-months of sobriety, got some backlash after poking fun at 21 Savage and his new predicament. But the singer said on Instagram that she wasn’t making fun at the fact that ICE might deport him but rather something else entirely, and now the recoil has caused her to delete her Twitter account.

Lovato first tweeted “So far 21 savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl.” Here’s the meme she liked.
Then another artist called her out for being insensitive toward 21 Savage and his possible deportation. Rapper Wale tweeted:
Demi Lovato was called out by @Wale for making fun of 21 Savage’s situation with ICE, a major issue in this country for many people.

Yeah, it was a whole big mess. Lovato quickly responded by saying: “Wasn’t laughing at anyone getting deported. I know that’s not a joke…not have I EVER laughed at that. The meme I posted/was talking about was of him being writing with a feather pen. Sorry if I offended anyone. But it’s no excuse to laugh at someone’s addiction, let alone their OD.”
The backlash didn’t stop there. People on social media sent her to the harshest messages including aiming for her previous drug use.
That drove the singer to delete her Twitter account. Her last tweet was “F*ck Twitter. This is why I don’t tweet anymore.”
She also told Wale that she had DM’d him and wanted to talk to him. We hope these two can come to some understanding over the situation.
