Cuban singer-songwriter Camila Cabello is set to star in the latest re-telling of Cinderella bringing not only her acting chops but her fire vocals to the film. This version will be more music-oriented with Cabello directly involved in the soundtrack for the film, which will be released by Sony Pictures. The Disney version of this classic folktale of the young woman who endures oppression at the hand of her stepmother and stepsisters is definitely the best know but there’s no word yet on plot points, for now, other than the new film will be a “modern reimagining.”

The idea for the film originally came from The Late Late Show host James Corden known for his super-popular segment “Carpool Karaoke” which featured Cabello with Joe Jonas.

Writer-director Kay Cannon is the woman behind the film who previously received Emmy nods for her work as a writer on the show 30 Rock and also wrote the Pitch Perfect comedies. She made her directorial debut with Blockers, a female-centric comedy starring Kathryn Newton, Leslie Mann and John Cena.

Latinx princesses have yet to appear on the big screen. Disney introduced Elena of Avalor in 2016 on the Disney Junior TV show Sofia the First and there have since been rumors that she might get her own film, but nothing has been confirmed. There has also been chatter about Lin-Manuel Miranda possibly developing a Latina princess for Disney following the immense success of Moana, for which he wrote the soundtrack.

The “Havana” singer will be the first Latina to take on the role of the princess in a major film, though Dominican-American actress Dania Ramirez portrayed Cinderella on the ABC series Once Upon a Time. The 22-year-old singer is no stranger to making history after she became the first Latina to open the 61st Grammy Awards ceremony when she performed her Grammy-nominated hit alongside Ricky Martin and J Balvin.

Her first album Camila, debuted at #1 on 110 different iTunes charts around the world and “Havana” was named the best-selling single of 2018 and became Spotify’s most-streamed song ever by a solo female artist.

The movie marks her acting debut in a feature film after a few stints on TV shows including Faking It and Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse.

The best-known Cinderella movie is Disney’s animated version released in 1950, and since then there have been two live-action remakes: one starring singer Brandy and Whitney Houston, released in 1997, and the 2015 film starring Lily James and Cate Blanchett released by Disney.

The 2015 remake earned a worldwide total of $543 million showing audiences are still loving the story of the unlucky princess who gets her happy ending. According to The Wrap, Latinx women over age 25 are the most frequent moviegoers.

Sony is putting the project on the fast track for production so stay tuned.
