Apple Tells U.S. Supreme Court They Proudly Employ 443 Dreamers

President Donald Trump loves to boast about his dinner meetings with Apple CEO, Tim Cook. Now, Cook is telling Trump how he really feels. In a powerful statement in support of Dreamers, Cook wrote a briefing to the U.S. Supreme Court to say that “Apple would not exist without immigration” and that his company currently employs 443 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients.

The U.S. Supreme Court is currently hearing three cases involving DACA and Trump’s decision to end the program. NBC reports that Cook’s statement is to show a “‘friend of the court’ filing in cases pending at the U.S. Supreme Court.” In 2017, Trump attempted to end DACA but was blocked by the Federal courts, and now the matter has gone to the U.S. Supreme Court. MSNBC reports that aside from Apple, “Amazon, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft also oppose Trump’s policies.”

Cook’s letter comes at a crucial point because Trump seems to be very pro-Cook, and now the powerful CEO is telling him that DACA beneficiaries are essential to his company and the country as well.

“We did not hire them out of kindness or charity,” Apple said in the court filing. “We did it because Dreamers embody Apple’s innovation strategy. They come from diverse backgrounds and display a wide range of skills and experiences that equip them to tackle problems from different perspectives.”

Cook said that his company upped their DACA hires from 250 in 2017 to 443 Dreamers in 36 states, coming from 25 countries last year.

“Our country has enjoyed unparalleled success by welcoming people from around the world who seek to make a better life for themselves and their families, no matter their backgrounds,” the company said. “As a group, they tend to display levels of determination and resolve that would be the pride of any business. We could tell you 443 stories to illustrate these attributes.”

The briefing also states, “Every one of these talented Dreamers should have the same opportunities as Steve did to create, work hard, and help change the world for the better,” Apple said. “After the DACA program was created, Apple eagerly sought out and hired Dreamers — relying on the commitment our government made to them.”

The U.S. Supreme Court will continue to work these cases this year and will be argued on Nov. 12, and the final statement will supposedly come in June of next year, MSNBC reports.
