The Latinx community has been the target of the Trump Administration since before Donald Trump became president. When we’re not being called rapists and criminals, we’re being discriminated for speaking Spanish, are reminded that the current administration is trying to impose a billion-dollar border wall, or are being targeted by ICE. Right now, many of us are living in fear because the Supreme Court may do away with the DACA program.

Many of the debates surrounding immigration began with Trump. But one of his loudest advisors that has been responsible for spearheading this movement against the Latinx community, is Stephen Miller. The senior White House advisor for policy doesn’t have the best reputation as a uniter of people. In fact, people that know him best have long said that Miller is a racist and white nationalist who has had a grudge against Latinx for decades. Yesterday it became clear that the rumors about Miller are in fact, very real.

In a report titled, “Stephen Miller’s Affinity for White Nationalism Revealed in Leaked Emails” by the Southern Poverty Law Center, we learn that Miller is a strong proponent of white nationalism. He has showcased extremist views and presented anti-immigrant ideology to the president, which in turn became policies.

The Southern Poverty Law Center writes, “These policies include reportedly setting arrest quotas for undocumented immigrants, an executive order effectively banning immigration from five Muslim-majority countries and a policy of family separation at refugee resettlement facilities that the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General said is causing “intense trauma” in children.”

Now people on social media, including several lawmakers, are calling for Miller to resign. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted yesterday that revelation about Miller’s ties to white nationalism and alt-right beliefs means he should have no place in the White House.

“Stephen Miller, Trump’s architect of mass human rights abuses at the border (including child separation & detention camps with child fatalities), has been exposed as a bonafide white nationalist. He’s still at the White House shaping US immigration policy. Miller must resign. Now,” she wrote.

Presidential candidate Julián Castro tweeted, “Donald Trump put a Neo-Nazi in charge of immigration policy. Both him and Stephen Miller, are a shame to our nation.”

Rep. Ilhan Omar also tweeted similar sentiments saying that her views about Miller have now been proven to be true.

“As I said earlier this year: Stephen Miller is a white nationalist,” she tweeted. “And now we have the emails to prove it. This type of racism and hatred has no place in our government. Miller needs to step down. Now.”

The White House stated the leaked emails about Miller saying that the Southern Poverty Law Center is a “discredited” organization and is “beneath public discussion.”
