Fitness guru and personal trainer Jillian Michaels has been slammed by critics accusing her of fat-shaming Lizzo after expressing she didn’t understand why the singer’s body is celebrated. During an appearance on BuzzFeed News’ “AM to DM,” Michaels said, “Why are we celebrating her body? Why does it matter? Why aren’t we celebrating her music? It isn’t going to be awesome if she gets diabetes,” Michaels continued. “I love her music. My kid loves her music. But there’s never a moment where I’m like, ‘And I’m so glad that she’s overweight.'”

Lizzo fans quickly came for the 45-year-old for fat-shaming the singer who is a vocal advocate for self-love and body positivity. Actress Jameela Jamil tweeted,”MY WHOLE DAMN THIN FAMILY HAS DIABETES AND HIGH CHOLESTEROL AND PROBLEMS WITH OUR JOINTS. Why is This woman acting like she’s an MRI? Stop concern-trolling fat people and get in the bin.”

The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg also declared her love for Lizzo on the show, calling her fabulous, and saying, “She is who she is … and if you don’t get it, then you don’t get it. I’m thrilled that she’s a big-figured woman. I’m thrilled that she is and that she has no compunction about wearing whatever she wants to wear and she’s comfortable.” Goldberg added, “So I do celebrate her.”

Lizzo has yet to comment and the “Good as Hell” singer has already declared she’s taking a break from Twitter to get away from online trolls, writing: “Yeah, I can’t do this Twitter s**t no more…too many trolls…I’ll be back when I feel like it,” she wrote.

In response to the backlash, Michaels posted a statement — not an apology — on social media:

“As I’ve stated repeatedly, we are all beautiful, worthy and equally deserving. I also feel strongly that we love ourselves enough to acknowledge there are serious health consequences that come with obesity — heart disease, diabetes, cancer to name only a few,” she shared with her 1.2 million Twitter followers. “I would never wish these for ANYONE and I would hope we prioritize our health because we LOVE ourselves and our bodies.”

What Michaels is failing to understand is that Lizzo’s self-love and confidence aren’t tied to her weight and that radical form of self-love has inspired her legions of fans, in addition to her music. Case in point, when the 31-year-old singer showed up at a Lakers game last year in a revealing outfit and twerked wearing her thong, she brushed off the criticism and took the opportunity to remind her fans that they shouldn’t let anyone shame them.

“Who I am, and the essence of me and the things I choose to do as a grown-ass woman, can inspire you to do the same,” she said during an Instagram live. “You don’t have to be like me. You need to be like you. And never ever let somebody stop you or shame you from being yourself. This is who I’ve always been. Now everyone’s lookin’ at it, and your criticism can just remain your criticism. Your criticism has no effect on me. Negative criticism has no stake in my life.”

Haters are always going to hate, no matter what. So we support Lizzo as she continues to be her fabulous self and live her best life.
