As the promotion for Selena: The Series on Netflix continues on social media, Chris Perez said he’s entirely in the dark about the new show. Selena Quintanilla’s widower noted that Netflix, the production company, or the family never consulted about the show, including on how his life and relationship with Selena would be portrayed.

Perez shared a still from Selena: The Series on his social media page and wrote, “Here is a pic I just saw of the actor playing me in the Netflix series. For the record, never met him, haven’t seen the script, and I have NO idea what is going on…..but, I’d love to find out.”

The image he shared was of actor Jesse Posey, who will be playing him in the show. Posey recently reflected on what Selena means to him: “Selena’s personal life has made an impact on how I perceive mine. Her love for her family, husband, fans, and her other passions, was one of a kind,” Posey said. “She knew how to connect with her audience. She made her fans feel special and people knew her interactions with them were genuine. She was born an icon but always remained humble.”

It’s no secret that Perez and the Quintanilla family have had their fair share of legal issues regarding the legacy of Selena. In 2012, Perez wrote his autobiography To Selena With Love, and while he initially received support from the Quintanilla family about the book, that all changed a couple of years later. In 2016, Abraham Quintanilla sued Perez after he sought to make his book into a televised show.

As USA Today reported, “Quintanilla’s attorneys have argued a television series would violate an estate properties agreement Perez and family members of Selena signed in May 1995 following her death. The agreement stipulated Quintanilla owns entertainment properties like the name, voice, signature, photograph, and likeness of Selena.”

While the Quintanilla family has always been protective of Selena’s name and image, they have gone on to secure deals with a variety of companies, including MAC Cosmetics, the H-E-B grocery chain, and, of course, Netflix.

They were also planning a concert this year in honor of the 25th anniversary of her death. However, that concert has been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Netflix has not announced an air date for  Selena: The Series, but Netflix did reveal on Twitter that the first installation will be released sometime this year.
