If you were around in 2023 when Karol G released Mañana Será Bonito, then you know how much of a balm to the soul the album is. Filled with the Colombian singer’s signature touch of empowerment and perreo, the album also showed us a more vulnerable side to her we all fell in love with and related to.
Now, the Bichota is getting even more real with a new Netflix documentary, Mañana fue muy bonito. The documentary gives us an intimate look at how the album was born, while taking us backstage on her stadium tour that ran from August 2023 to July 2024. And did we mention she became the first Latina artist to headline a stadium tour, shattering attendance records worldwide? Well, there’s that.
The documentary is empowering, but you may also want to keep the tissues around. If you’re like us, some moments made us teary-eyed, and we’re sharing them with you. You can thank us later for the warning.
1. Baby videos of Karol G signing with her family
Some stars are born while others are made, and Karol G is the first. One of the most heartfelt pieces of the documentary is the footage of baby Carolina dancing and singing with her family from a young age. Little Karol G knew what she loved from the beginning, something her father noticed immediately and honed. The Bichota was keeping the fam entertained at the carne asada while we could barely coordinate our first steps.
2. Watching her prove everyone wrong with her success
Despite working incredibly hard to get to where she was, Karol G faced many obstacles on her road to success. From people telling her the urban genre was only for men to imposter syndrome, things weren’t always color de rosa for Karol G, especially during the early days of her career.
“Since I was a child, everyone told me, ‘Karol, this dream isn’t for you. According to them, I was the wrong gender, came from the wrong side of the world…” she said in the documentary. “But what if I stopped seeing all those things as obstacles and transformed them into my source of strength?”
Sixteen years later, the Bichota has shown everyone she was that girl through her unparalleled success. Just remembering it is making us teary-eyed.
3. Seeing her nearly give up her career after facing advances from her manager
One of the most heartbreaking moments of the entire documentary was when Karol G detailed a harassment experience that made her leave music for a few years. While speaking to how difficult it is for women to reach success in urban music, she details how when she was 16 years old, she moved to Bogotá on her own to pursue her musical career.
With her parents’ approval and the backing of a wealthy businessman who told them he would sponsor her career, she moved to Colombia’s capital, excited to launch her dreams. Then, things took a turn for the worse when he invited her over to a party at his apartment. Taking advantage of the situation, he told her he was starting to have “special feelings” for her, and the only way they could advance her career was if she felt the same way toward him. The man was around 45 to 50 years old at the time.
“My heart broke because I felt like ‘you’re putting me in a situation where all my dreams and hopes are conditioned,” she said. “Sadly, in big industries, women have to face these uncomfortable situations, and not just to get to their goal, because I can assure you any woman with self-respect will allow abuse just to get what they want. Imagine how many women, girls, people, can see themselves.”
After that she quit music for several years. Keeping her experience a secret from her parents.
4. Talking about the breakup with Anuel
Another heartbreaking part of the documentary is Karol’s retelling of her breakup with ex-boyfriend Anuel AA. Not only was her experience all too relatable for anyone who has been in a toxic relationship, detailing how she would wake up “wanting to die,” and lacked self-confidence toward the end. Her vulnerability led her to write some of the most powerful songs in the album, like Amargura and Mientras me curo del cora.
5. …And then manifesting a healthy relationship with Feid
The good thing is that she left all that behind and now has the love she deserves. Even though Feid and Karol G have kept their relationship mostly private, except for some on-stage perreo and red carpet appearances, the Bichota dishes on how amazing he treats her. And we love to see it.
The documentary shows footage of how they fell in love, their adorable moments together, and even how he inspired the happier songs in her album. Ahem, Tus Gafitas, Mi ex tenía razón and Si antes te hubiera conocido.
6. Her homage to Selena Quintanilla AND singing Como la Flor at her San Antonio concert while Selena’s family was there
Back on the real tear-jerking moments, let’s take a moment to talk about how the Bichota turned our world upside down with her homage to Selena Quintanilla. Throughout the documentary, Karol G shares how Selena has always been an inspiration for her, but little did we think she would take it to the next level with an homage to the Queen of Tex-Mex during her stadium concert in San Antonio, Texas.
When she took the stage dressed in a sparkly dress with a flower ornament on her head and a rose in hand, she shared her love for Selena with the crowd. Saying how she’d never get to meet her idol, but could feel her presence. Yes, by this point, we were already sobbing. Then boom! She starts singing Como la Flor. We’re still recovering.
7. When she almost died in an airplane accident
Throughout the documentary, Karol G shares how she feels she’ll die young, which is why she has such a drive for living life to the fullest and leaving a legacy. Then, things got all too real. While traveling with her family, the cabin of her airplane filled with smoke, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing. To say we nearly lost it at that moment is an understatement.
We need you around for a long time, Karol!
8. Her breakdown from overwhelm
One thing that makes this documentary amazing is how relatable it is. Karol G had us in our feelings when she broke down before a concert from feeling overwhelmed by everything she had to juggle. Taking a moment to hug one of her concert’s producers, she says an image of herself in New York City came to her mind, back when she wondered when people would buy tickets to come see her. This reminder pulled her out of her overwhelm, reminding her this is what she’d been praying for all along.
9. Her visit to the NASA honorees of her scholarship
Finally, our eyes filled with tears watching how Karol G is using her fame and fortune to help those who need it most. During a visit to Houston, she met with several young girls from Colombia who are attending a NASA program thanks to the Con Cora foundation.
In the take, Karol’s mom who came from little means is moved by her daughter’s big heart, and so were we. Thanks to the Con Cora foundation, these young women have hopes of one day going to space and leading the next generation of Latina astronauts.
