As President Donald Trump continues to bicker about helping Puerto Rico recover from Hurricane Maria, others are stepping in and doing it themselves. One of those people is Oprah Winfrey, who has taken it upon herself to donate $2 million toward Puerto Rico’s hurricane relief. If that doesn’t move you to tears, perhaps this will: she was inspired to give because of Lin-Manuel Miranda.

In a statement, according to People magazine, Winfrey said: “I was so moved by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s commitment to bring Hamilton to Puerto Rico and support the community that served him growing up, that I wanted to join in the revitalization efforts of an island so rich in culture, beauty, and heritage.”

The publication is also reporting that the $2 million will be distributed between Hispanic Federation’s UNIDOS Disaster Relief & Recovery Program and Flamboyan Arts Fund.

“The needs of Puerto Rico and our fellow American citizens following the tragic hurricanes are still very real, and the work that has already been done by the Hispanic Federation, Flamboyan Arts Fund and other organizations on and off the island is long from over,” Winfrey said.

Miranda has yet to comment on this extraordinary donation, but we’re sure he’ll be ecstatic. Oprahmag.com reports that both Winfrey and her BFF Gayle King attended the production of Hamilton while Miranda was showing it in Puerto Rico.

People on social media applauded her generosity including political pundit Ana Navarro who tweeted “As the Trump (mis)Administration tries to cut-off funds for Puerto Rico….what an amazing act of kindness by @Oprah.”

Agnes Trampe also chimed in tweeting, “I am thankful for those who remember #PuertoRico and the great needs that still exist. Thanks, @Oprah, for this great donation. We are grateful for the example of kindness. God bless you!”

Oprah’s donation comes just days since Trump went off on Twitter with lies about how much the government has given Puerto Rico toward hurricane relief aid. Furthermore, in his tweets, President Trump ignorantly said that Puerto Rico wasn’t part of the United States.

We’re hoping that Oprah’s donation will also inspire others to follow suit and donate as well, especially since it doesn’t look like our government plans on helping.
