Almost three decades after Selena Quintanilla’s death in 1995, fans of the iconic Tejano singer are finally getting a taste of her posthumous album, titled Moonchild Mixes. She was only 23 years old when she was killed but has since remained a fixture in the music industry with her songs remaining popular with younger generations. She was recently awarded a posthumous Grammy lifetime achievement award and we’ve seen her life story in the award-winning eponymous 1997 film starring Jennifer Lopez and, more recently, the two-part Netflix series starring Christian Serratos. All across the world, she continues to also break new ground in fashion, make-up, and, of course, music, thanks to her family and fans. Back in March of this year, her father Abraham Quintanilla announced that a new album would release in April to coincide with what would’ve been Selena’s 51st birthday. After a small delay, her estate has finally announced that “Como Te Quiero Yo A Ti,” the first single from the highly anticipated new album, will be released this Friday, July 29.
“Fall in love with Selena all over again with brand new arrangements beautifully curated for her fans,” her estate said via their Instagram. “Listen to Selena like never before in this 13-track song retrospective!”
This first single marks the third time “Como Te Quiero Yo a Ti” has been released following its original 1987 recording and the remastered, posthumous release in 2004. While the estate hasn’t said how this new 2022 version will differ, the rest of the album is still likely to feature digitally altered vocals from Selena when she was a teenager, as had been announced by her estate back in March.
“My son [AB Quintanilla] worked on this Selena’s voice with the computers,” her father previously said. “He took 10 songs that are part of our catalog from our company and completely [redid] new music.” He added that the pitch had been adjusted so Selena would sound as she did before her death, rather than the thirteen-year-old she’d been at the time of recording.
No release date for the whole album has been confirmed by the estate yet but Selena sleuths have found a preorder already available on Target, showing that Moonchild Mixes will be released on August 26, 2022. Selena’s sister Suzette is also involved in the project working with Warner Music on the cover art.
All these years later, Abraham is grateful to Selena’s fans for continuing to support her family and remembering the singer, saying, “They haven’t let go of her. They’re waiting for a project like this to come out and I know it will be well received by the public.”
“Como Te Quiero Yo A Ti” is available to pre-save on Spotify and will be released on July 29, 2022.
