The legacy of singer Selena Quintanilla Perez remains over 20 years after her untimely death. One portion of the Mexican-American pop star’s life is the focus of a new series El Secreto de Selena, or Selena’s Secret, on Telemundo. The network released the trailer for the series Thursday.

Based on the 1997 book also titled El Secreto de Selena by journalist Maria Celeste Arrarás, the series documents the singer’s death and moments leading up to the tragic event. The show is Arrarás’ firsthand account and experience of covering the story, including her well-known interview with Yolanda Saldívar, the president of the Tejano star’s fan club-turned-convicted murderer. Actress Maya Zapata portrays Quintanilla Perez in the series; while Damayanti Quintanar plays Saldívar.

Similar to the 1997 biopic featuring Jennifer Lopez, Selena, the one-minute trailer opens with a ring hitting the ground and shows the moment Arrarás goes on-air to announce the death of the famed singer. It also flashes to pivotal moments like Saldívar holding the gun to her head, her murder trial and the late star’s wedding to Chris Perez, to name a few.

Arrarás serves as co-executive producer for the series with Fernando Barbosa, Luis Balaguer, Leonardo Aranguibel and Francisco Cordero. El Secreto de Selena was produced by Buena Vista Original Productions, Moconoco, LatinWE and BTF Media.

Though Quintanilla Perez’s life was cut short on March 31, 1995, her impact has outlived her short years. She had seven no. 1 hits, including “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” “Amor Prohibido,” and “No Me Queda Mas,” and even has a museum erected in her honor. Her iconic style is still being duplicated today. MAC makeup commemorated her with a makeup collection that sold out online in a matter of hours.

Many will be tuned into the 13-episode season. El Secreto de Selena will debut on Sunday, August 25 on Telemundo.
