In honor of Frida Kahlo’s birthday which is today (July 6) , we decided to celebrate with a collection of articles that both honor her, and inform readers on her life and influence. She may have not been acknowledged enough during her life, but today she is now a worldwide icon of art, feminism, and fearlessly being yourself. She has played such a strong role in cultivating our culture. The following are five ways in which we have kept Frida’s memory alive. Que viva Frida!

The most obvious way to keep an artist’s memory, and work, alive is to consistently exhibit his or her work. Thankfully, museums such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Victoria and Albert Museum, and even Google, have shown Frida’s oeuvres.

A Heroine for the Children

Children’s books and toys are great fun for kids, but we also want our kids to learn with them. This includes our Latinx culture, and it’s VIPs. Frida Kahlo will live forever, thanks in part to companies like Lil’ Libros, which has an adorable book dedicated to the artist. Some well-intended toys mean well, yet miss the mark–Barbie’s version of Kahlo was slammed by many (including Salma Hayek) for being the antithesis of the celebrated artist.

For Frida, Salma Hayek was nominated for Best Actress at the 2003 Academy Awards. Hayek has continued to honor and celebrate the Mexican artist.
