Justin Bieber and model Hailey Baldwin are reportedly engaged. The rumored news broke this weekend, which left me wondering? Is getting married young a thing now? I say thing because this latest celebrity engagement comes just weeks after it was reported that Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande are also engaged. For anyone keeping tabs, Bieber is 24, his bride to be is 21, while Davidson is also 24, and Grande is 25.

In a 2014 Gallup poll, it showed millennials were not thinking about marriage in the slightest. In fact, the poll reported that only 16 percent of 18-29 year-olds had already tied the knot, while a whopping 64% were still single. So what gives? Are these celebrities starting a new trend? If so, I’m kind of worried.

It’s not so much that these couples are getting married young, it’s that they’re getting engaged in record speed. Davidson and Grande have only been dating a couple of months, and while Bieber and Baldwin have been off and on for a couple of years, they have only recently rekindled their relationship in the past few weeks.

In 2015, a young woman wrote about her decision to marry young in Cosmopolitan magazine, which came off as a justification to others who judged her for it.

“I was barely into my twenties when my husband ‘put a ring on it’, and only 16 when I met him for the first time. I wasn’t the type of child to idealize my wedding day while draping a pillow case over my head, and even as a teenager I was certainly never described as ‘boy-crazy’, yet I have just celebrated my five year wedding anniversary at the ripe old age of 27.” Wow!

She adds, “Yes I am aware that you are thinking it won’t last, but are you aware that you are wrong? Age is no guarantee of maturity, and youth is no guarantee of a divorce.” She is certainly right about that. Divorce rates have been steadily climbing for a while now.

While I have no idea why Grande and Davidson are getting married so quickly  — their Instagram shows them madly in love — I do have one theory as to why Bieber proposed to Baldwin.

Bieber is devout Christian, and if he’s following the ways of the church, making it official is the right thing to do. It’s not that I think Bieber is a virgin, but it seems that he may be changing his ways to be more inclined to scripture teachings. And Baldwin’s dad, actor Stephen Baldwin is also a strict Christian as well. A 2013 study showed that the trend of young Christians getting married is still growing at an increasingly high rate.

These recent engagements also have a common factor that trumps age. Scooter Braun is manager to both Bieber and Grande. Someone on Twitter said: “First Ariana get engaged to Pete Davidson and now Justin Bieber to Hailey Baldwin the devil works hard but Scooter Braun works harder.”

Grande responded with: “You do realize we are human being who love and have lives… right? And that Scooter is a wonderful human being too who cares first n foremost [about] our health and happiness? Love is lit. Sh*t happens. I hope to god it happens to you too. U deserve it.”

So there you have it, love is love. So what does age have to do with it? We still have mixed feelings about it.
