OG Wonder Woman Lynda Carter Set to Return in ‘Wonder Woman 3’

We’re looking forward to seeing Latinas play superheroes like Sasha Calle being the first Latina to play Supergirl, as we slowly start to see more representation and diversity in film and TV. However, it’s been decades since the first Latina Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter, came into the scene and now she’s planning a comeback. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins teamed up with Carter for the DC FanDome 2021 event on Saturday, confirming that the actress would again reprise her role as the warrior Asteria, the “Golden Warrior” of the Amazons, in the blockbuster franchise. Carter initially made a cameo in Wonder Woman 1984 starring Gal Gadot which came out in 2020.

“Gal, who’s so bummed not to be here, who’s the busiest person in the world, with now three little kids and shooting, so she was so bummed not to be able to be here,” the filmmaker said. “But we are all three very excited about some exciting things coming up with Wonder Woman 3.”

Carter portrayed the iconic Princess of the Amazon back from 1975 to 1979 and is considered the first Latina Wonder Woman.  Jenkins previously told Good Morning America that Carter was one of the first people she contacted when she started working on the franchise back in 2017 with the first release, Wonder Woman.

“I know what it was like from the inside out,” Carter said during the event. “I know what the legacy meant to me, and when I created the character, it wasn’t on the comic book page — her kindness and her goodness. Her strength was her Lasso of Truth … and that meant something to me.”

“Who would have thought in my life — at this time in my life — that this gift would just present itself to me, and that’s so cool,” Carter added. “And that’s what I’m hoping for all of the fans of Wonder Woman … to know that your life is full of surprises, and the Wonder Woman in you is alive and well.”

Carter, who is also a singer, grew up in Arizona with her mom Juanita Córdova Carter, who was of Mexican and Spanish descent, and her Scottish-Irish father. She was 24 when she landed the role as Wonder Woman and her secret identity, Diana Prince solidifying her place as one of the most iconic portrayals of a superhero on TV. The role remains the best known work for the 70-year-old actress whose portrait as Wonder Woman is part of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s officer decor, which Carter tweeted about last year adding, ” Never stop being fierce and brave. “

The film is still in development and no release date was announced.
