Boricua icon Bad Bunny is well-known for his love and pride of his native Puerto Rico and for becoming one of the most successful Latino artists in the world. After releasing his new album DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS on January 5, it has already taken the internet by storm and has been praised as a love letter to Puerto Rican culture and history for its use of symbolic references like the endangered sapo concho and the original flag of Puerto Rico. Following the release, Benito not only made history but also announced his first residency in Puerto Rico which has already sold out.
On Monday, January 13, Bad Bunny announced that he will be doing his first residency in his native Puerto Rico this summer following the release of his new album, which he has dubbed his “most Puerto Rican” album yet, through a video posted to his Instagram. Throughout the residency, titled “No me quiero ir de aquí,” or “I do not want to leave here,” El Conejo Malo will play 21 shows at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan from July to September. The show is the first formal residency that a singer has ever done in El Coliseo de Puerto Rico, known by residents as “El Choli,” and all 30 dates are now officially sold out.
“Thanks to the music and the love you give me through my music, I’ve had the privilege of traveling to sing in different places of the world. I appreciate and love to do it,” Benito said in the video. “But for now, I’m in Puerto Rico. I’m home, having fun and, to be honest, I don’t want to leave.”
Tickets for the first nine shows were only open to Puerto Rican residents for in-person purchase starting on Wednesday, January 15, and pre-sale tickets for the remaining shows became available online on Friday, January 17. After all shows sold out, Benito added six more dates for September, which are now also sold out according to the residency’s website.
DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS is already a beloved album amongst the Puerto Rican diaspora for its criticisms of colonialism and gentrification and embracing of genres like Plena, jíbaro music, and salsa. Following the album’s release, Benito made history with salsa track “BAILE INoLVIDABLE” when it reached the #1 spot on the US Apple Music chart, becoming the first salsa song in history to achieve the milestone.
Additionally, he made history on January 14 as the first Latin artist to tally 100 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Following the release of DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS, all 17 songs from the album charted on the Billboard Hot 100, led by “NUEVAYoL” at No. 27. With this, Bad Bunny has a total of 113 career Hot 100-charted songs and becomes the 20th artist to join the 100 Hot 100 hits club according to Billboard.
