Camila Cabello is having a moment. We should say she’s having a year. This week she released her Romance, her second studio album, and at just the right time. It’s the end of 2019, and Cabello is all about self-reflection and being her best self. Yesterday she sat down with Beats 1 DJ Zane Lowe to discuss this incredible new place she’s in, her famous boyfriend and dealing with anxiety.

Cabello started by saying that her new album was her outlet into self-discovery, but more importantly, songwriting helped her refocus and get back to that safe place. When talking about her anxiety, Cabello said that in the past couple of months, she realizes that the “brain can change,” and she has been working to improve herself mentally and combat her anxiety.

“I see a huge difference,” Cabello said. “I know a lot of my fans struggle with issues like that. “Training of the mind is the most important thing because that’s what we have for the rest of our lives.”

She, of course, opened up about her relationship with singer Shawn Mendes and disclosed which songs on Romance are about him. “Liar” is one of them. She also shared that she’s already adopted some of his traits.

“I think that he has a very kind of pure free energy,” she said. “Like he’ll say to me sometimes, ‘Oh, I had to talk to this person because it made my heart hurt.’ And I feel like he feels this need to kind of lift the weight of whatever is hurting him for him to be free. And I think that that’s really beautiful. That’s a trait that I’ve adopted is like whenever I feel like there’s a weird energy between me and somebody or if my heart is hurting for some reason, I’m like, “Okay, what do I need to do?” And I’ve noticed that about him…I think it’s because of this purity that he has that I don’t think that he can lie or fake because it hurts his heart. He’s just like a very pure person and I think he’s constantly kind of lifting those weights off of him because he can’t live like that, and I love that about him.”

So cute! She also added that while she’s very much in love, there’s still a lot of emotions and hardships that come with being in a relationship, especially one that is very much in the limelight.

“I still have so many fears when I fall in love,” Cabello said. “There’s always that fear of it ending that is like in the back of your mind. And to me, falling in love feels life-changing, it’s life-changing. I think something that I have realized from falling in love is that ironically, the most important relationship that you have is the one with yourself. And I think that for a hopeless romantic, that’s a pretty mind-boggling thing to learn is that actually, I’m actually the one that I’m going to have my whole life. And in order for me to be good to this person, I actually have to understand myself better.”
