Camila Cabello is having her best year ever. The former Fifth Harmony member turned solo sensation seems to be the number one pick for the role of Maria in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story.

If you hadn’t heard the amazing news already, Spielberg has put out a casting call request Latino Spanish-speaking actors for his realistic version of West Side Story. As soon as the announcement was made, people on social media started dropping names for the roles — as if they have anything to say about it. But you know, they actually do. People’s voices are being listened to more and more these days, so it would be kind of amazing if Camila was considered.

Refinery29 made their request loud and clear: “In my hopeful 2021 future, West Side Story is a huge hit, and none of the actors are well-known. Young & Hungry’s Aimee Carrero plays Maria. Better yet, my new favorite pop sensation Camila Cabello. For Tony, I want Taron Egerton, Grant Gustin, or Garrett Clayton. I will allow Darren Criss to be Riff. And John C. Reilly can be Officer Krupke if he so wishes.”

Music video director Joseph Kahn said he is certain Camila will play Maria. He tweeted: “Camila Cabello as Maria in Spielberg’s WESTSIDE STORY. Bet on it.”

Here’s more from the internet:

But the question remains..does Camila speak Spanish? Spielberg specifically said that the Latino characters must speak Spanish. So we did a little digging to find out.

Here’s Camila singing “Despacito” in Spanish!

The Cuban singer is fluent!

What is there more to say. Camila needs to play Maria in West Side Story, that’s it.

Rita Moreno — the only Latina in the original West Side Story — has already given her blessings for the remake, but she has some advice for Spielberg.

“If it’s going to be a contemporary version, then I would imagine that (the music) has to be rap,” Rita said to “ET.” “And if there is that, what happens to the songs? What are the dances going to look like? Are we not going to have the (West Side Story choreographer) Jerome Robbins dances? I’m just guessing that it’ll be really, completely different.”
