I Sat in a Pink Himalayan Salt Room and I’ve Never Felt So Zen

I’ve done some pretty weird things in the name of health and peace of mind. This summer I tried crystal light bed therapy to heal my body and calm my anxiety. Two years ago I tried sensory deprivation, which basically involved me floating in a dark and closed tank filled with gallons of water and pounds of Epsom salt, to enhance mindfulness and brighten my complexion. This time, I tried something quite different from anything I’ve done before. I sat in a room filled with pink Himalayan salt for a half and hour and it was probably one of the most relaxing things I’ve done in a while.

Modrn Sanctuary, a luxury wellness center in NoMad, New York offers a ton of holistic treatments ranging from crystal light therapy, acupuncture cupping herbs, hypnotherapy, Reiki and energy work, and more. Their new Himalayan salt room wasn’t the trippiest thing I’ve done but by far one of the coolest.

In case you’re not familiar with it, salt therapy, also called halotherapy, is a holistic method that reproduces the natural micro-climate of a salt cave. Sounds dope, right? That’s because it is. The room disperses saline aerosol in a high concentration, in a room filled with walls and surfaces covered with layers of salt. Even the floor is filled with salt – it’s literally everywhere.

The purpose of the salt room is to help clients relax and unwind for 30 minutes but there’s a lot more science to this. Pink Himalayan salt is considered to be one of the purest forms of salt in the world and with that purity comes health benefits that range from enhancing the immune system, increasing energy and alertness, increasing focus and concentration, reducing migraines or headaches, eliminating infections, reducing allergy and hay fever symptoms, and so much more.

I had been experiencing daily headaches since I got back from my girls trip in Portugal two weeks ago. At first I thought it was just a matter of readjusting to the time difference but after a week, I started to realize that maybe it was the fast-paced, back-on-the-grind NYC culture that had my body off and my mind anxious. I needed a healthy escape, a healing outlet, and it turned out the pink salt room was just what the doctor prescribed.

I walked into the semi-private salt room while fully dressed (there’s no need to take your clothes off for this) and sat back in one of their comfy, zero gravity reclining chairs and took in the ambience. I looked up at the salt walls and I sank my bare feet into the salted floor that felt a lot like hard sand, and closed my eyes. Then I preceded to take deep breaths and inhaled in the highly concentrated salt air that was dispersed through saline aerosol. The only thing I had to do in the next 30 minutes was relax and I was determined to do so.

After 10 minutes or so, I found myself in such a meditative and relaxing state that I actually fell asleep for about 5 to 10 minutes. I came in with a headache and it was literally gone before the session ended. I felt more rested than I had felt all week and that was well worth this investment.

I’m not saying this is a miracle treatment. You won’t come here and instantly get healed from whatever you’re currently dealing with. But it’s certainly a sweet escape from the hectic place we (especially us New Yorkers) call home and who doesn’t need a little bit of that in their lives?
