Selena Quintanilla Perez is an icon and a legend. We love her for her warm heart, great style, incredible music, but also for her timeless beauty looks. Her winning combination of classic Old Hollywood winged eyeliner and red lips, paired with ’90s on trend half ponytails and square-shaped acrylics, were both glam and effortless. We have been copying her style forever, and most likely always will.
We are all for learning absolutely everything we can about Selena. While we feel pretty confident in our music and style knowledge of the Tejana star, we want to learn more about beauty facts regarding the Queen of Cumbia (and are positive you do too). That’s why we did the research and compiled a handy list of 15 Selena Quintanilla Perez beauty facts you will want to know. Learn them all, and then share them with your friends and fam!
Selena’s Favorite Lipstick and its Dupe
One of the first things you should know about Selena’s beauty routine is her favorite lipstick. We are all obsessed with her bold red lip, so who wouldn’t want to know about the exact lipstick she used?! Selena’s favorite lipstick was Chanel Brick. The color has since been discontinued, but Ev Curl Girl found a match with Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Ultra Lipstick in Brick.
Her Favorite Perfume
Now that we know Selena’s favorite lipstick, and what product to buy to recreate the look today, let’s learn about Selena’s favorite fragrance. The superstar bought Boucheron, a perfume by the legendary French jewelry and watch company. The scent was launched in 1988 and shaped to look like a ring. You can still get your hands on the Boucheron perfume today, and smell just like Selena!
Selena Loved This Nail Polish
Another Selena beauty fact we were able to uncover is the exact shade of one of her favorite nail polishes. The legend wore L’Oreal Creme nail polish in Sangria (257), a wine-colored hue. In the film Selena, for accuracy, Jennifer Lopez also wore this exact same nail color. You might be able to nab a bottle of the discontinued hue online, but we are sharing this pic of a wearer donning the exact color so you can also find the best color-matched dupe.
And These Makeup Brands
Previously, we mentioned how Chanel Brick was Selena’s favorite lipstick. But she wasn’t a makeup snob who only stuck to high-end beauty brands. In addition to being a Chanel and Elizabeth Arden lover, the star also loved drugstore brands like Maybelline and Revlon.
Selena Was Creating Her Own Fragrance
It’s sad to think about all the wonderful things Selena would be doing today, and what she would have accomplished; we know it would have been amazing! Just look at the incredible legacy we have of hers, as well as, all the new projects that have come to fruition and are in the works. One of the things we found out when researching Selena facts is that she was working on a perfume.
The Quintanilla Family Released Several Selena Perfumes
Luckily, Selena’s family decided to release three fragrances from the three perfume samples she had picked out before her passing. There is said to be, in total, five official Selena fragrances that were produced and released: Forever Selena, Como La Flor, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, Para Siempre Selena, and Amor Prohibido.
And Was Planning a Makeup Line
In addition to planning a fragrance, Selena was also planning to create a cosmetics line. This is said to have been the inspiration for the online petition that led to the immensely popular Selena collection for MAC. It’s fun to imagine what cool colors and products would’ve been in her original collection, and how the packaging would have been designed. Selena’s family is said to be creating a new Selena makeup line; we hope any and all ideas she had, will be implemented into this new line.
Selena Is Getting Her Own Cosmetics Line, Called Selena Vive
The Blast has reported that Abraham Quintanilla, Selena’s father, has applied for a trademark for “Selena Vive,” to use as part of a cosmetics line. Needless to say, people are excited about the idea! The collection is said to include “perfumes, compacts, eye makeup, lipstick, foundations, and nail polish.”
Selena Had Her Own Salon
Selena’s boutique, Selena, Inc., included a hair and nail salon and had two locations. The first store, which served as the headquarters, was opened in 1994 in Corpus Christi; a San Antonio locale followed. Selena designed clothes with designer Martin Gomez and designed and created several of her iconic on-stage looks herself.
Selena’s MAC Collection Sold Out in Minutes
If you’re a Selena fan, you know about her wildly successful collection with MAC Cosmetics. You might have been one of the over 37,000 people who petitioned the beauty brand to create a Selena collab. If you were lucky, you got your hands on an item (or several) from the 13-piece collection. Products were named after Selena jams, such as “Amor Prohibido,” “Techno Cumbia,” and “Como La Flor,” and quickly sold out (some sources say in minutes). The MAC Selena collection is the brand’s biggest-selling launch — ever.
The Colors Were Formulated from Selena’s Own Makeup
What makes the Selena MAC collection so special is that they were colors the icon wore herself wore. This is because Suzette supplied MAC with photos of cosmetics from Selena’s own makeup case. She told the brand, “Selena’s line is based on her personal makeup, that she had when she passed. I have everything of hers. I wanted the colors to be about her personally, what she wore on and offstage. I took pictures of everything she had in her makeup case, and the colors she was wearing at the time, so her line is actually based on Selena.”
Selena’s Lipstick-Stained Microphone
When she sang, Selena’s microphone would naturally become covered with her lipstick. After each show, she would unscrew the microphone, take it apart, and clean it with a toothbrush. The last time she used it, she didn’t have the opportunity to clean it; the mic is now a gift to us, all her fans, as it still has her lipstick on it and lives in the Selena Museum in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Selena’s Short Hair Phase
If you look at old-school photos of Selena, in the ’80s and early ’90s, you will notice her hair is short. A curly bob was the on-trend style of the time, but a few Selena beauty facts are that she permed her hair during this time period, and also dyed it. She actually dyed her hair and fried it, to the point that she had to cut it short. But there’s also a huge possibility that her curls were natural because you could tell even when her hair was blown out. Either way, her short hair phase was cool, and ’90s bobs are back on-trend!
The Reason Why the Ven Conmigo Album is in Black and White
It’s super cool that Selena had a totally DIY approach to her signature style. She would make and embellish her own clothes and boots, and would often do her own makeup and hair. This includes dyeing her hair jet black the night before her photoshoot for the album cover for Ven Conmigo (recorded and released in 199o). Selena got dye on her ear, and in order to hide it, insisted that the cover be shot in black and white, and her hair styled in the mohawk seen in the photo. The rest is history.
Selena Cut Her Own Hair
In 2014, A.B. Quintanilla, Selena’s brother, shared a throwback photo of her with her curly hair and a shoulder-length lob. He lovingly states, “It’s crazy how she could Rock any hairstyle and own it!!! She sometimes would cut her own hair!!!” We aren’t surprised! Selena liked to take an involved, hands-on approach to her image and would DIY a lot; that’s part of the reason why her style is uniquely hers!
