Many are calling socialist democrat, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez the change we need in today’s politics. The 28-year-old Bronx-born Puerto Rican who defeated Rep. Joe Crowley at the primary elections in New York’s 14th congressional district, might be a political newcomer but she understands Americans needs. Quite a few folks believe that, including Academy-Award winning actress, Viola Davis.

Davis was stopped by TMZ cameramen this past Sunday afternoon and was asked who she thinks is “the next champion of our time to help improve race relations” She immediately named Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “I think she would be pretty good because she’s young,
Davis said.

While being young does give Ocasio-Cortez a fresh perspective on politics, that’s only one of many reasons why she’s be a great congresswoman. Ocasio-Cortez has very progressive views when it comes to immigration and healthcare. In fact, she supports doing away with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency which has technically only been around since 2003. It was created post 9/11 in efforts to instill better national security protection but has turned into a discriminating agency that wants nothing to do with immigrants—brown ones especially.

Issues with ICE and immigration discrimination has been brutal since Trump took office. Hundreds of families have been separated at the border and quite a number of Latino immigrants—even those who have been here for over 20 years—have been deported left and right. A man was even stopped by ICE in the middle of driving his pregnant woman to the hospital. She was on the brink of giving birth.

She’s also a big supporter of Medicare For All, which is a much affordable path to ensure everyone gets access to quality healthcare they can actually afford.

Her win in the primary elections was historic and if she wins in the midterm elections in November, she’ll become the youngest woman ever elected to congress. Some folks have even referred to her as the next Barack Obama.

The midterm elections are on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 and in many ways this election is even more important than the presidential election in that it basically shapes the future of our political landscape. Who holds congress basically determines legislation that’s passed, so make sure to vote!
