‘Gordita Chronicles’ is Now Available to Stream on Tubi & Hulu
The beloved series about an immigrant Dominican family is available to stream on Tubi and Hulu/Disney+ following its cancellation on Max after one season
Latinx shows regularly garner a devoted following and earn critical acclaim and yet continue to struggle to achieve longevity. Fans of shows like One Day at a Time and Gentefied continue to mourn the loss after their cancellation and Gordita Chronicles was also among those after it was not renewed for a second season on streaming platform, Max. Show creator Claudia Forestieri developed the series inspired by her own life growing up as a gordita Dominican immigrant in Miami in the 1980s. Despite having a 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 82 percent, the series was cancelled and it was announced that Max would no longer host the show but now it’s getting a new home on streaming service, Tubi as well as Disney+/Hulu. The first season became available to stream on Friday, March 29 and the show’s cast and creators celebrated its new home and a chance to reach new audiences.
“I’m like merengue-dancing in my chair kind of happy to have my baby streaming on Tubi and Hulu! The heartbreak caused by the cancellation and removal of the show from Max has officially healed,” Forestieri tells HipLatina. “So grateful to Sony, Tubi, and Hulu for believing in this show and for putting Cucu back in our lives again. God knows we need more Caribeños on TV! I hope today marks a step forward for all of us that are working hard to bring more Latine content to the screen.”
The series centered on the Castelli family who arrived to Miami from the Dominican Republic and are adjusting to life in the U.S. in 1985. The show was a mix of authentic storytelling around the immigrant experience and ’80s pop culture nostalgia meets Latin traditions. The cast includes Diana Maria Riva (Adela), Juan Javier Cardenas (Victor), Savannah Nicole Ruiz (Emilia), and newcomer Olivia Goncalves as the lead character, 12-year-old Carlota “Cucu” Castelli. Following the news of the revival, cast members took to Instagram to share their excitement about the beloved show finding a new home.
“Ohhhh HAPPY DAY!!! THRILLED to receive the news that our beloved #GorditaChronicles Sn.1 will be available now on @tubi as of March 29th!! When the episodes were pulled off the shelf, it was added heaviness to the injury of having this wonderful show cancelled. I get asked all the time where can it be found… AND now it has a home!!! REPRESENTATION MATTERS!! WEPAA!🇩🇴✊🏽💃🏽,” Riva wrote in a caption.
“Good Friday everyone! If you didn’t have a chance to watch Gordita Chronicles the first time around, now is your chance to catch up on all the episode of its season 1 on Tubi, Hulu & Disney Plus! Don’t miss it!
Love your favorite Gordita😘,” Goncalves wrote on Instagram page.
Showrunner and writer Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz, whose mother was a Colombian immigrant, and Forestieri were the first Latina showrunner and creator duo and they joined forced with executive producers Eva Longoria and Dominicanas Zoe Saldaña and her sister, Cisley to bring the show to life. Max canceled the series after deciding to pull back on live-action kids and family programming following WarnerMedia’s acquisition by Discovery, Deadline reported.
“Cucu is the moral compass of our show. She stands her ground and feels powerful in her space. I really love that this is from her perspective and know it will give so many young girls and women strength,” Longoria previously told HipLatina. Riva also praised the importance of the empowering messaging behind the series especially for young Latinas:
“In a day and age where women, especially our daughters, are living in a world of constant ‘compare & contrast’, and being dictated what they should and shouldn’t look like, this show does the opposite. The show uplifts and empowers young people with body and self acceptance, and It’s a message I strongly believe in,” she previously told us.
