Selena Gomez’s Mom Reveals True Feelings About Jelena Romance and It’s Relatable AF

Possibly one of the most difficult things to go through as an adult is that turning point in your relationship with your mother where you both realize that you’re now officially a grown-up and she can’t tell you what to do anymore. It can be an emotional journey for sure, because not all moms are equipped to handle it well and not all daughters are ready to grow up. For Selena Gomez and her mom Mandy Teefey, however, it seems that the transition is going… Well, moderately smoothly at least.

In a new interview with Gossip Cop, Teefey clarifies some of the untrue stories that the tabloids have recently published about SelGo and addresses all of those rumors about her being unhappy over the Jelena reunion. After Gomez’s split with the Weeknd in October, rumors began to surface that she was back together with on-again, off-again longtime love Justin Bieber. Shortly after, fans noticed that the mother and daughter unfollowed each other on Instagram—likely due to Jelena being in couples therapy and mom realizing the relationship may be longterm after all. But now Teefey is opening up about her daughter’s relationship and, to be honest, it sounds like just about what any mom would say after her daughter grows up and starts dating people you may not always like.

“Selena can live her life however she wants as long as she is happy, safe and healthy,” Teefey tells Gossip Cop. When further questioned whether she was concerned for her daughter’s health and how her reignited relationship may be affecting the star’s lupus and recovery, she said: “She is 25 years old and knows what is at stake with her health. I do not control her the way it has been portrayed. Selena is an adult and can make her own choices.”

Earlier this year, Gomez underwent a kidney transplant from her best friend Francia Raisa. Afterwards, she wrote on Instagram: “There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”

For her part, Teefey agrees with her daughter that they were “beyond blessed that we had Francia in our life.”

Although Selena hasn’t returned a request to comment on her mother’s comments, according to E! Online, she does seem to be enjoying her reunion with Bieber. According to Teen Vogue, the two have were spotted wearing matching gym outfits recently and even reportedly celebrated New Year’s Eve together in Mexico. And although mom Teefey might not like it, nothing has felt more true or relatable than when she said that Selena is an adult and “can live her life however she wants.”

After all, there’s just not much that any parent can do about their child’s relationships in adulthood—except hope that you taught them well and that they take care of their own health and happiness.
