Bad Bunny Makes History with Album of the Year Grammy Nomination
Bad Bunny is no stranger to breaking records and making Latin music history
Bad Bunny is no stranger to breaking records and making Latin music history. At the VMA awards in August, he was the first non-English language performer and Latin (Spanish-language) artist to win Artist of the Year, and his most recent album, Un Verano Sin Ti, spent a total of 13 weeks as number one on the Billboard 200 chart and broke two Spotify streaming records. Now, the esteemed Puerto Rican reggaetonero has reached yet another outstanding milestone, as his record-breaking album has been nominated for Album of the Year for the 2023 Grammy Awards. Un Verano Sin Ti is the first album completely in Spanish to be nominated for the award in the organization’s 65-year history.
It’s up against some tough competition in the Album of the Year category including Beyonce’s Renaissance, Mary J. Blige’s Good Morning Gorgeous, Coldplay’s Music Of The Sphere, Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, Lizzo’s Special, Harry Styles’ Harry’s House. In the past, the “Tití Me Preguntó” singer received a total of six nominations and has won two Grammy Awards; last year, his third solo studio album, El Último Tour Del Mundo, won Best Música Urbana Album, and his second solo studio album, YHLQMDLG, won Best Latin Pop or Urban Album in 2020. He has called this time in his life the most authentic creatively.
“I’m taking advantage of this moment in my life when I can do whatever I want and wear what I want, so I get to live life more authentically,” he told Harper’s Bazaar. “I don’t do it to become more famous or to call attention or to disrespect anyone. People on the outside can think that I have a strategy or I wear this to call for attention, but in reality I just know who I am.”
In addition to this historic moment, Bad Bunny has also been nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance for his song “Moscow Mule” and Best Música Urbana Album for Un Verano Sin Ti as revealed by the music academy on Tuesday. Though Un Verano Sin Ti was nominated for Album of the Year at the Latin Grammys, but the award went to Motomami by Rosalía. He was the most nominated artist with 10 nominations, he went home with five including Urban Music Album of the Year.
Regardless of which artists and/or projects you’re rooting for at this year’s Grammy Awards, this historic achievement is an impressive feat to say the least, as this is the first time a Spanish-language album has been nominated for the General Field categories, also known as the Big Four, at the acclaimed award show. As always with Bad Bunny, we look forward to seeing what milestones he may hit or records he breaks in the future.
