Jenna Ortega Says ‘Wednesday’ Season 2 Will Be Spookier

Fans of Wednesday were elated when Netflix officially gave the green light for a second season back in January. Now, viewers have even more reason to be excited for the upcoming season. Jenna Ortega recently dropped some enticing teasers during an interview with actress Elle Fanning for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series. Ortega unveiled the show will get spookier, darker, and amp up the horror elements, sharing, “We’re ditching any romantic love interest, which is really great. We’re going to get bolder, more dark.” Yes, you read that right. The next season will lay to rest the romance for Wednesday Addams, at least for now, and serve up a heavier dose of the macabre.

She even alluded to the possible resurrection of principal Larissa Weems, played by Gwendoline Christie, whose death at the hands of Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci) toward the end of season one shocked many people. Ortega commented, “I’m doing everything in my power to throw the most insane plots that would possibly bring this woman back from the dead.”

On that note, the actress will also be a producer on season two and be more involved in how the episodes unfold and how her character develops. In a previous interview with Variety, she expressed that there were many instances where she disagreed with how Wednesday was depicted in the script of the first season. This time around, Ortega is voicing her opinions and said, “With a character like Wednesday, who is so beloved, I didn’t want to get her wrong. So I tried to have as many conversations as possible with the writers.”

At one point in the Variety interview with Elle Fanning, Jenna Ortega gets candid about the pressures of working in the film industry and being put in the spotlight after Wednesday debuted. She opened up about the toxicity of social media and the challenges she faces trying to be genuine without being judged, “And social media, what it does to anyone our age, it’s such a comparing game. It influences bandwagon mentality. It’s very manipulative.”

However, it seems the role of Wednesday Addams has imbued the actress with a sense of self-confidence and empowerment: “Wednesday forced me out of my shell.” Wednesday is, after all, a character who champions individuality and self-expression and can be inspiring to anyone who’s felt like the outcast. 

With major changes in store for the second season of Netflix’s Wednesday and Jenna Ortega spearheading a few of those, it appears viewers will be in for quite a treat.
