Long-time collaborators Gael García Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries, Old) and Diego Luna (Narcos, Rogue One) are teaming up again for a new Hulu project! After appearing together in films like Y tu mamá también, Rudo y Cursi, Casa de mi padre, and others, the Mexican actors announced that they would be producing and co-starring in a new Spanish-language boxing series on Hulu, entitled La Máquina. The limited series, produced by Searchlight Television, follows a boxer nearing the end of his career (played by Bernal) and his sneaky manager (played by Luna) as they work to end his reign with a bang. “But to make it to fight night, they must navigate a mysterious underworld force,” the synopsis reads, according to Deadline.
“Gael, Diego and Marco are world-class storytellers and we look forward to bringing audiences their story and experiencing alongside them this last shot their characters get together,” said Craig Erwich, President of Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment.
“It is a real honor to unite Gael and Diego onscreen again for La Máquina, their friendship and chemistry is a joy to experience,” Searchlight Presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum added.
The dynamic duo first met as infants at the end of the 70s, as their mothers were close friends. Their first collaboration film was the coming-of-age story Y tu mamá también which earned Luna and Bernal international fame. After collaborating on several other Spanish-language projects, they began their own production company, Canana Films.
However, they’ve also made successful careers on their own, appearing on stage, film, and television. Bernal has appeared in projects including Chicuarotes, Station Eleven on HBO Max, and Old, directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Looking ahead, he will next star in a Marvel Halloween special on Disney+, which may adapt the comic book Werewolf by Night, as well as Cassandro for Amazon Films.
Luna is known for his roles in The Book of Life, If Beale Street Could Talk, and most recently, DC’s League of Super Pets. But he’s probably best known for his role as Cassian Andor, a Rebel spy and the protagonist of the Star Wars film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Disney has confirmed that he will reprise his role in the Disney+ series Andor as the lead star and executive producer. The show will serve as a prequel to Rogue One and show how the Rebellion began, premiering on August 31st, 2022.
“The only relationship I can compare to having a brother is the relationship I have with Gael,” Luna previously said, according to The Telegraph. “We have been with each other forever, and will be there for the rest. Now we are choosing to work together. Imagine your brother shares the same passions and loves as you do, cares about the same things you do, goes through life changes with you… It all corresponds. There is no success you can celebrate more than the success of a brother.”
No release date has been announced yet for La Máquina but we are excited to see these two share the screen again and in more future projects.
