If you follow Gina Rodriguez on social media, you know she often gives her fans a behind the scenes peek into what being an award-winning television star is like. She documents movie prep, wardrobe fittings, and even QT with family and her boo. But recently, Rodriguez used her platform to share something a bit more intimate: she revealed she suffers from anxiety.
My beautiful friend @antonsoggiu came to visit from Norway and he included me in his magical art. TEN SECOND PORTRAITS. It's always great to be in front of his lens but this time it was just me. Bare and exposed in the streets of la. No makeup. No styling. Just me. I suffer from anxiety. And watching this clip I could see how anxious I was but I empathize with myself. I wanted to protect her and tell her it's ok to be anxious, there is nothing different or strange about having anxiety and I will prevail. I like watching this video. It makes me uncomfortable but there is a freedom I feel maybe even an acceptance. This is me. Puro Gina.
In a video posted to her Instagram she shared, “I suffer from anxiety.” In the same caption, Rodriguez showed her resilience and sent a strong message to those who also struggle with anxiety. “There is nothing different or strange about having anxiety and I will prevail.”
Immediately, her fans offered an outpouring of support.
Since people can often be reluctant to talk about anxiety and mental health struggles, her fans appreciated Rodriguez’s candor.
And others used Rodriguez’s announcement as a chance to be just as open about their own experiences.
Considering anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States, affecting around 18 percent of the population, Rodriguez’s visibility helps to break down the stigmas associated with mental illness. Hopefully her openness will inspire others to speak candidly about their anxiety and get the help and support they need.
